• The principle of trying to improve safety and standards is a good thing.
• But older drivers will quit rather than retrain.
• This could lead to a serious shortage of experienced manpower.
• Larger firms that pay for training are at risk of having staff poached.
• Smaller firms may opt to not pay for any training and simply poach qualified staff with better pay-thus saving themselves money.
• Training must be tailored to drivers' jobs rather than just ticking boxes.
