:ommercial vehicle testing in Ireland is to be toughened up after CVs hecked in the UK are found to have defects David Harris reports.
:ELAND IS TO improve commercial vehicle testing ogramme — partly because of a number of serious defects ind in Irish-registered vehicles yelling through the UK.
The Irish government said last ,ek that the country's Road fety Authority (RSA) would :e over the CV testing regime a viously operated by local thorities. Ireland's nister for Transport, says: "The levywas conducted following zernment and public disquiet ating to a number of highfile road collisions involving 's and the high number of h-registered vehicles detected h serious defects by the UK horities in the course of EUuired inspections." One change in the set-up is a proposal to target operators thought most likely to offend, similar to the method already used in the UK. The Irish also plan to link the annual vehicle test with operators' fleet and maintenance records, establish a new IT system for the entire vehicle testing network, and put an end to operators testing their own vehicles.
The RSA has already begun to increase the number of roadside checks in conjunction with the Garda i.the Irish police force.Th ere are 158 privately operated test centres in the Republic of Ireland, with compulsory roadworthiness testing currently applying to 230,000 CVs. Responsibility for vehicle testing was transferred from the Department ofTransport to the RSA in September 2006.
