Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Colin Barnett Believe it or not, the story of the Sevel van building partnership is now 21 years old. The first series, (which comprised the original Fiat Ducato, the Citroen 025 and Peugeot's version, which eventually came to the UK as the Talbot Express) lasted from 1981 until the arrival of the current range in 1994 when Citroen and Peugeot adopted the Relay and Boxer names.

This month's European Road Transport Show in Amsterdam saw the well-leaked revelation of the third generation. Anyone expecting a radical new shape to come out of the Val di Sangro factory in Italy will be disappointed, as the makers have recognised the Sevel range's greatest strength to be its load area and wisely left it such as it was, apart from stiffening it up.

Where the vans have changed is with a completely new interior, new engines, a wider choice of models and, of course, some new exterior styling. The information that follows is a generic roundup of all three marques.

Final UK specs and pricing are still being considered prior to the vans going on sale here in the spring, so be aware that each marque may not include the full range of model derivatives and standard equipment.

Chassis and body

Although looking much as before, the van body has in fact been substantially revised under the skin. As can be seen from the cutaway picture, many areas of the chassis and body have been strengthened, both for extra rigidity and for noise suppression. This has increased weight to the point that on some models the GVW has had to be raised to maintain payload. A more flexible mixing and matching of wheelbase and roof-height con binations will result in version not previously seen in the UK.

A new extra-long wheelbw of 4,050mm will be available f( chassis-cab variants. With this broad description IA be chassis-cabs wi single or crewcab platform-cabs an chassis-cowl These v e r Sions, t gather with tt retention of ti Sevel's simp rear suspension la out, should help to mai tam n their popularity wi bespoke coachbuilders.

Higher powered variants v now be supplied with rear di brakes, with parking brak provided by a small drum int gral with the disc.

Externally, the latest modE are identifiable by new Ho front and rear, a revis sculpted bonnet and front wi design, and body side protecti strips. All vans now have roi mounted brake lights; there a new, easier-to-use door hz dles; and the rear bumper incE porates a larger, non-slip stE
