Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The new temperaturecontrolled distribution arm of the National Freight Consortium Distribution Group is to start trading under the name of Alpine.

The new division will operate as Alpine Refrigerated Distribution in tandem with Alpine Refrigerated Deliveries, which was acquired by the NFC last October (CM, Oct 25). It will have a combined turnover of £70 million and a total fleet of almost 800 vehicles.

Alpine managing director, John Davies, says: "Alpine represents a significant presence for the NFC Distribution Group in the temperaturecontrolled distribution sector."

"We now provide a delivery service for a number of big names such as Birds Eye, Wall's, Findus and Lyons Maid', continues Davies, "and it is our intention to expand, offering the same, high quality facilities to other frozen and chilled food manufacturers and retailers wanting to devolve their distribution operations."

Alpine is jointly owned by the National Freight Consortium (60%) and the Union international (40%). All new Alpine staff will be given the opportunity to buy shares in the successful employeeowned Consortium.

SPD, the NFC's third-party distribution company, has won major contracts from three oil companies worth a total of at least £1.5 million. The deal involves SPD delivering packaged oil products to filling stations and retail outlets throughout the country.

From SPD's Chadwell Heath depot in Essex, the company will be delivering lubricants for Esso and Gulf Oil. The Esso contract is to distribute lubricating oils, anti-freeze and grease to customers in North London, the Northern Home Counties and East Anglia.

The Gulf contract is for England, Scotland and Wales, with vehicles delivering from SPD's Manchester and Renfrew depots, as well as from Essex.

The third company, Elf Oil, is using SPD to deliver oil packs, as well as oils and greases. At its Chelmsford and Manchester depots, orders are received from Elf via SPD's main computer at Watford.
