ROAD equivalent tariff shou be tried for an experimental flu year period, and be confined lorries using ferries servil Scotland's Western and Nod ern Islands, according to ti Scottish Transport Users' Co sultative Committee.
In a report to Scottish Secr tary George Younger, the TUC says there is a case or introdu ing RET (relating the charge f using a ferry close to that for equivalent journey by road) c an experimental basis, and f the effects to be studied aft five years.
TUCC chairman W. A. Dalzi said it should then be continu( if the hauliers using the ferrii pass on the benefits of RET the communities on the island and provided that the Gover ment supports the trial for a ft. five-year period.
And he went on to sugge that the Government be ei couraged to continue expel menting in route licensing fi ferry crossings, and that the pr sent system of charging be r tamed for foot passengers ar private cars.
