Renewal of their B licence was granted, without modification, to Messrs. Thomas Love and Sons, Perth, by the Northern Scotland Licensing Authority, last week, after an argument concerning furniture removals.

" Anywhere in Great Britain," was the applicants' destination for furniture removals, but the L.M.S. Railway Co. attempted to restrict the radius.

Mr. Robert White, manager of the firm, stated that serious interference would be caused to the business if the

licence were restricted. There were many instances in which it was nearly impossible for removals to be undertaken by the railways. Seldom had they claims when the packing and transport were performed by their own staff, but claims were common when the removals were effected by the railways.

The Licensing Authority said he hoped, in future, that the railways would make preliminary inquiries before lodging objections.

Enston Principle to be Applied.

" All holders of C licences applying to change from the C to the B class will be regarded, in future, as newcomers to the haulage business and be required to satisfy the double onus of the Enston judgment." This announcement was made in Manchester, on Monday, by the North Western Licensing Authority.

Should Trailers be Further Regulated?

"Something should be done to regulate the use of trailers," states a resolution passed by the council of Batley and I3irstall Chamber of Commerce, regarding the Association of British Chambers of Commerce memorandum. The resolution, adopted unanimously, expressed the opinion that private traders should not be further restricted in the use of road transport.

Shipping Rates Advancing.

Freight rates for shipping motor vehicles overseas are said to be on the increase. They have already advanced for India, Burma, Ceylon and the Mediterranean ports, and, we understand, there is every likelihood of a general increase. This is particularly important to the British manufacturer, because the duty payable on vehicles entering most overseas markets is computed on the c.i.f. value.

Fords to Manufacture in New Zealand.

The Ford Motor Co. (New Zealand), Ltd., has been registered in New Zealand, and work has commenced on the construction of a new assembly plant at Wellington. It is anticipated that the new factory will be completed in about six months. With this addition, the number of 'Ford factories and assembly plants in the British Empire is 10. Next to the mammoth works at Dagenham, the company's largest undertaking is at Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
