Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I WAS ASTONISHED to read reports in Commercial Motor that an old-established and well-respected livestock haulier —Wm Armstrong of Cumbria —had been prosecuted by local authority busybodies (CM 7 December).

Armstrong is renowned as a leading company in this field, and is one of the few authorised to both train and certify drivers in the necessary skills for this specialised work. You have to wonder what this country is coming to when vast amounts of taxpayers' money is being spent on this kind of garbage.

If Derbyshire County Council. or indeed any other authority, wishes to improve the lot of farm animals, then why don't they campaign against the arguably cruel and barbaric "ritual slaughter" methods employed by some religions. The animals have their throats cut while fully conscious and in the presence of their companions without the benefit of pre-stunning — which is normally a legal requirement.

When 'New' Labour outlawed fox-hunting I asked my MP how they could ban this, yet allow such cruel slaughter methods? He passed this on to the minister responsible (Ben Bradshaw MP) who replied that the government came down on the side of "religious freedom" first and foremost.
