cab on its chassis and renamed the range FL (forward mounting low entry) back in 1985. If low entry was a good idea for a distribution vehide then, it's no less so today, so it was something of a surprise when in June 1998 Volvo replaced FL at '7 tonnes and above with the FM. The cab is based on the earlier PH design, and commonality of parts is about 8o%.

The reason for the change in height was that the perception of extra space inside the cab was thought to be more important than ease of entry. With this medium-height installation the engine tunnel is lower by i6omm. The smoother design profile, said to reduce the drag value over the FL by 20%, comes in day, sleeper and Globetrotter versions. The two-man Globetrotter cab, narrower than the PH, is unique in this weight sector. All the cab's steel panels are hot-dip galvanised for longevity, and all plastic components weighing more than 5o g are marked to simplify the eventual recycling process. The interior is designed for safety as well as for comfort, and three-point seat belts, a deformable steering wheel and a driver's air bag are included as standard. The main bu is interior-sprung. All FM cabs come either standard or C trim.

The FM7 was introduced at the bottom the range as a 17-tonner, and was updat six months later when the legislati changed to allow 18 tonnes on two axii Volvo's six-wheeled FL7 26-tormers use t same charge-cooled 7.3-litre engine, rated 25 ohp and 290hp, while the more power version is carried over to the 32-tonne eig wheeled chassis.

Volvo's Euro-2 07C engine is a devel< ment of the earlier 07A/13 series engi used in the FL7. It's bigger by o.6 litres, hangs on to old technology, using just t, valves per cylinder, and it still retains t, separate heads. However, new improved tons, rings and replaceable wet, plate honed cylinders are said to reduce frictic while both compression and injection pr sures were increased to give cleaner em sions. A larger crank was added to withsta the higher output. Ancillaries such as water pump, in-line injection pump and compressor are all gear-driven via 1 engine's timing mechanism.
