The suggestion that every haulier will pick up the odd prohibition notice is unacceptable—liCVs must be safe at all times, said North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Torn Macartney. He was commenting on the record of Burstwick, East Yorkshire-based building block manufacturer Mr Builder (1987), whose vehicles had attracted 11 immediate and two delayed prohibitions in five years.
The company holds an international licence for 14 vehicles and 11 trailers.
Vehicle examiner Andrew Corbett said the defects listed indicated that the drivers' daily checks were inadequate. The condition of 10 vehicles and four trailers examined in July and August had been satisfactory, and he agreed that there had been no prohibitions since May, when the company bought two new tractors and an aight-legger.
Company director Gary Ralph said that in the 12 months up to August the firm had spent E100,790 on maintenance, which showed it did not take such things lightly. He suggested that the problems had been created by a combination of rapid expansion in 1997 and problems finding the right staff. "Circumstances perhaps got the better of us a bit," he added.
