Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"The specification was perhaps too complicated for this market."

Chris Wright

Chris Wright is MD of Commercial Vehicle Auctions. CVA holds sales at Doncaster on two Wednesdays each month with a throughput of 160 to 200 trucks, 80-150 trailers and various items of plant Wright also conducts sales around the country at customers' premises. "We are only now beginning to see a few more later examples, registered from 2000 onwards, but for a truck that has been around as long as the Actros we would expect to see more older ones coming through the auctions.

"When they were new, both 4x2 and 6x2 models powered by the V6 engine should have been of most interest to fleets. But the specification was perhaps too complicated for this market which is why Mercedes-Benz finally brought out the Axon "Despite the big long-distance cab, early 1997 and 1998 examples weren't popular in the used truck market and, to ward off poor residuals, M-B took them back to remarket them through its dealer network. There is a lot of loyalty to the badge and they were quite successful. With improved reliability, the later ones are now holding their value a lot better while a lot of the older ones are going for export. Some owner-drivers favour the more powerful and slightly heavier V8 with the topof-the-range MegaSpace cab."
