II Companies that regularly load goods into trucks In roll cages can find up to a third of their accidents are rollcage related, according to the Health and Safety Executive (ME).
It has produced a guidance leaflet, Roll cages and wheeled racks in the food and drink industries; reducing manual handling injuries, available free from HSE Books.
A runaway roll cage can cause serious injury, as can one that topples off a tail lift, warns the HSE, and back Injuries and muscle strains can affect anyone trying to push one up a steep slope or across uneven ground. Fully laden, it could weigh as much as half a tonne.
Measures that can be taken include using cages with larger diameter wheels—they can reduce the amount of force required to move them by a quarter—and restricting the height of the load they hold.
