Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Customs officers have seized 34 trucks and nearly 65,000 litres of kerosene from an unnamed Lancaster haulier as part of an on-going crackdown on the use of illegal fuel.

Customs officers in the North-West say the lost duty on this quantity of fuel would amount to over 5.,33,000. Investigations are continuing.

Jeremy Lee, Customs head of detection In the North-West says: "The success of this operation shows Customs' determination to tackle all types of fraud in the UK, "Illegal fuel—whether used commercially or privately—undermines honest filling stations, deprives public services of cash and can damage vehicle engines."

Customs a, Excise has been targeting the use of illegal fuels, such as rod diesel and kerosene, as part of an attempt to halve the level of fraud an the UK mainland by the end of March 2006.
