With reference to Mr G. Smith's letter on Continental drivers and vehicles (CM March 101, may I correct him on his points about Continental vehicles? But first let me say that I do appreciate that Westmorland is in a remote part of England.

He says that Continental vehicles have postage stamp-sized number plates. I agree that plates in front of the lorries are small, but the rear plates are larger in most cases.

His next point is that "drivers have no identification to show". Has Mr Smith been out of England? Has he not heard of a thing called a "passport" or "identity card"? One cannot get in or out of any country without one of these.

Point No. 4 Mr Smith made "inferior lighting". My answer is that one Continental lorry and trailer has more lights than six in England: and this is the answer also to Mr Smith's first point that there are no rear markers on large and long vehicles.

SIGNORE G. TINTONE, A Continental Driver, staying at Worthing, Sussex.
