WHEN several cases against haulage VV contractors and lorry drivers were heard at Bury St. Edmund's, last week, the prosecuting solicitor said that the delay of four months in bringing the cases had been due to the staff of the Eastern Area Licensing Authority having had to give the whole of its attention to organizing road traffic under the national defence scheme.

Chester's Good Grouping Progress.

AANY groups of vehicles have been 1VIconstituted, in connection with defence plans, in the Chester area and the formation of further sections is proceeding rapidly, so that it is hoped the organization in the district Will be complete in the near biture. At a meeting at Chester, on Thursday of last week, Mr. F. Williamson, defenceplans transport officer for the NorthWestern Traffic Area, elucidated many problems for the benefit of those present. Mr. J. E. Woodford, Clerk to

the North-Western Licensing Authority, also spoke and Mr. J. Neild, president of the Chester and District Chamber of Trade, presided.

Grouping for Dual-purpose Tractors.

AT a meeting of the executive of the Norfolk branch of the National Farmers' Union, last Saturday, it was decided to approach headquarters and the road-transport organizations, Concerning the absence of provision for the emergency grouping of agricultural tractors used jointly for haulage and cultivation purposes.

Sloth of " Groupists " in the Shields

SPEAKING at South Shields, last – week, Mr. H. W. A. Bleach, of the Northern Licensing Authority staff, said they had particulars of 651 vehicles, for grouping purposes, in the Shields area. Up to the present, six groups covering 211 vehicles had been formed, which left 440 vehicles still to be covered.

A QUESTIONNAIRE, asking manuri facturers to assist in solving Birminghain's 'traffic congestion at peak hours, has been circularized by the corporation committee which was set up in January last to consider this con-` stantly growing problem. ,

NEW HARROGATE SITE FOR . ROYAL SHOW?

I T is understood that-the Royal Agricultural Society is considering Budding Park, the estate of Sir Joseph Radcliffe, near Harrogate, as a possible site for the Royal Show in 1941 or 1942. In August last, Harrogate Town Council invited the Society to hold the show in or near Harrogate in either of these years, if a suitable site other than the Stray could be found. The Stray has been ruled out because after the Royal Show was held in Harrogate in 1929, there were complaints as to the enclosure and disfigurement of this common land for several months before and after the event, and because the Stray is not considered large enough for the purpose.

• A " Break " for Blackwall-tunnel Users. '

IT is satisfying to observe that the 'Minister of Transport has given notice that he will make regulations prohibiting the use of Blackwall Tunnel by slow-moving vehicles on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. Vehicles affected are those drawn by horses, those limited to less than 8 m.p.h.', and barrows. When these regulations come into operation, congestion should be considerably relieved at the peak periods,
