SALES of commercial vehicles in Britain fell in August by 20.01 per cent compared with August 1979.

At 28,050, August sales were 7017 lower than in the same month last year. New registrations for the first eight months of the year at 191,929 were 9.31 per cent down on the same period in 1979.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures, only 19,018 Britishmanufactured vehicles were registered, compared to 25,408 in August 1979. Despite still being the market leader, Ford's sales dropped from 9516 to 7673.

The total number of imported vehicles during August also fell from 9699 to 8972. However, Volkswagen increased its August sales figures from 1360 last year to 1523 this year.
