4tion showing a fleet of 4M vehicles, the whole of which has been equipped with Wood hydraulic tipping gears of the underbody type, these vehicles being the property of the Greenham Sand and Ballast Co., of Isleworth.

This is only one example of the popularity of this type of gear which, incidentally, is manufactured by the Hydraulic Hoist Co., Ltd., 182, Lord Street, Southport. During the past six months the works of the company have been kept going both night and day, and, even so, not all the demands could be met. The output of gears for 1926 was more than double that for 1925, and up to the end of July this year the company has manufactured and supplied 40 per cent, more gears than for the whole of 1926. The plant and staff have, of course, had to be considerably augmented.

During the past year the design of the rotary pump has been improved and it is claimed that it is now impossible for leakage to occur through the glands. A point of interest is that during the whole period of production of these tipping gears in this country the maker has never heard of the breaking or damaging of an oil pipe, however much vibration the vehicles have had to stand.

In addition to the many power takeoffs which have been designed in the past the following types have recently been added: Peerless, Pierce-Arrow, Liberty, model 506 Associated Daimler, model 24 Stnd 27 Albions and the 6-ton 11/faudslay, which means that fitments

are available for practically every commercial vehicle manufactured.

Tests have been carried out in the past few weeks to prove the efficiency with which the gears are working. In it model 506 Associated Daimler lorry tipping was conducted ten times with a 9-ton load. The shortest time taken to reach the full angle of over 50 degrees was 11 seconds and the longest time 17 seconds. ,In a model 24 2-ton Albion with a 3-ton load this was also tipped 10 times, the extremes being 9 seconds and 14 seconds. Similarly, with a Peerless loaded with 7 tons, the times were 16 seconds and 23 seconds; a Pierce-Arrow with 6 tons 10 cwt. in 14 seconds and 22 seconds, and a 6-ton Mandslay carrying 8 tons in 13 seconds and 23 seconds.
