Under Driver CPC, nearly all Cand D-licence holders must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to maintain their Driver Qualification Card (DQC). Anyone holding the relevant licence on 10 September 2009 acquired ‘grandfather’ rights and has until September 2014 to complete their training. After that, they will no longer be able to drive without a DQC.

The content of the training courses must be approved by JAUPT, which does spot checks to ensure standards are maintained. Each course must last for at least seven hours and, for classroom training, the maximum recommended ratio is one trainer for every 20 drivers.

Kevin Spragg, general manager of Automotive Transport Training in Leicestershire, explains that many specialist courses, such as ADR for carrying dangerous goods, can be incorporated into periodic training. “ADR is a three-day course with exams on the fourth day. It can be cross-referenced to CPC as 21 hours training because you can’t have testing as part of CPC.”
