• Magistrates last week accepted a driver's mitigation for failing to comply with a height restriction on the Blackwall Tunnel that his van was "entrapped" by warning equipment.
Evidence was given by a police officer that a sensor which automatically switches on red traffic lights was activated by a truck in front of the van, but the lights went green again as the van passed. The magic beam sensor is on the main approach to the tunnel before the last diversion slip road available to overheight vehicles.
Wells Street magistrates fined the driver £50 for failing to comply with a height restriction but decided there were special reasons for not endorsing his driving licence.
