Bobby Lawrence, who has been a member of the National Freight Corporation since its inception 10 years ago, is very much in the mould of Sir Daniel Pettit, whom he is to succeed as chairman in January. Like Sir Daniel, he is an outstanding organiser with a gift for delegation and expects those to whom he delegates to justify his trust in them.

Likewise, he has been a great sportsman. Bob Lawrence refereed rugby matches until comparatively recently and swam every morning before ' starting his day's work. His enthusiasm for fitness is not limited to physique. He. is a great believer in the importance of keeping the brain fully charged.

I remember his telling me, when he was general manager of the Sundries Division of British Railways Board (which became National Carriers), that he "disappeared" for a day every week. Even his secretary did not know where he was.

He spent the day in wan dering about the freight sundries system, talking, listening and looking, and learning what really went on. He was entirely free from office pressures for 24 hours and could absorb vital knowledge and reach decisions in a relaxed way.

I was reminded of this by his recent comment that he aimed to continue Sir Daniel's policy of going out to meet the staff throughout the organisation and hoped to build on the personal understanding that he had developed at all levels, They are two of a kind that Britain desperately needs — tough, born managers but essentially likeable men.
