Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the most modern 'types of engine. It is a trouble for which it is difficult to find a reason, and is caused, apparently, by the condensation of water, but where the vapour comes from is something of a mystery. It can, however, be avoided, as in the new Albion engine, by providing breathers at the highest point of the timing case; a similar precaution can also be taken in connection with the valve gear.

ANENT the present boom in cylinder-head lubri cants, it is of considerable interest to note the results of some tests carried out with a modern type of engine with pressure lubrication to all bearings. The engine was equipped with a special crankcase with glass windows, and in one series of experiments It transpired that upwards of 600 revolutions of the crankshaft took place on starting from cold before oil began to exude from the ends of the connecting rod big-ends. As this was the source of lubrication for the cylinders the importance of providing other means, such as is exemplified in these upper-cylinder lubricants, is, we think, sufficiently emphasized, particularly for use during the cold weather.

THE decision to leave the gold standard has not had nearly such alarming results as many people anticipated, and, in fact, in many quarters it has had a good effect. It will be realized that there is no similarity between abandoning the standard merely as the result of an abnormal international situation, with a balanced Budget and good stocks of raw materials and food, fully equipped industry and important assets all over the world, and the immediate post-war position in foreign countries, • where inflation resulted from the exhaustion of internal resources and Budgets which were hopelessly unbalanced. AN interesting little trouble experienced with the new London trolley-buses was that they seriously interfered with certain wireless sets operating within 100 yards of them. Representatives of the British Broadcasting,Corporation, Ltd., the General Post Office and London United Tramways, Ltd., recently spent a whole night experimenting in the Kingston area with six normal trolley-buses and six that were equipped with a special choke coil in the lead to each control arm, and it is believed that this has cured the trouble.

THE new M.A.N. oil engine for road vehicles still uses a single combustion chamber, but, instead of arranging for circular air motion, has a Bosch four-hole injector. The piston edges are kept hot to avoid fuel condensation on the cylinder walls, which formerly caused much trouble with lubri cating-oil dilution. To ensure good combustion at low loads, an automatic arrangement cuts out three of the six cylinders, thus forcing the entire load upon the remaining three. The compression ratio is 13 to 1 and the maximum pressure 55 atmospheres. At 1,250 r.p.m. 90 b.h.p. is developed. The cylinder bore is 170 ram. and the stroke 180 mm. There are seven main bearings.

IN an article published in the September 9th issue of The Rand Daily Mail, Dennis Bros., Ltd., is congratulated upon the efficiency of its Cbusiness methods. On a Wednesday afternoon, IrColonial Motors, Ltd., the company's distributor in the Transvaal, cabled for a chassis, and on Friday it was shipped on the mail boat. The Dennis works are at Guildford, and the chassis had to be taken to London, disassembled, packed in two cases and dispatched by rail to the ship,
