Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We say farewell to VW's impressive Transporter, while Citroen's Nemo join's CM's long-term test fleet.

Words: Julian Manes

You know something's right with a van when someone asks if there's anything in the lot to borrow, and there's no grumbles when you toss them the keys to the Volkswagen Transporter.

This is testament to the driveability of the VW which makes it a good choice when one of the CM staff needs to do some weekend work.

During our six months together, the Transporter has proved itself worthy, more than satisfying the demands we've placed on it.

From repeated blasts down from the North to the South, to loading up with what can only be described as an entire garden, it's done its duty and kept the CM team happy throughout.

And once you shut that cabin door, there's a real sense of security thanks to its excellent build quality, which makes driving a breeze.

We still hold a slight reservation with the engine's refinement, though. which is surprising due to the good work elsewhere, but this is far outweighed by the strength of the Transporter's overall ability. •

LONG-TERM TEST VEHICLE

CITROEN NEMO

Price: 111,875 Engine: 1 4-litre 70HP Paytoad: 610kci Mileage: 5,500 Expenses: None Faults: None Average mpg:F-.4. 0 After previously questioning the viability of Citroen's new mini-van (CM 5 July) due to its limited load area, it was time to bring one into the CM long-term fleet for closer examination. Having seen a surprising number on the road, were we missing a point?

Our example came with the 70hp 1.411Di engine and hall-mesh bulkhead the rest was pretty much as standard. There's enough features to stop you thinking you're driving around in a cut-price offering.

Furthermore, from the outside, Citroen has done a good job on styling, giving it a certain presence among the traffic despite its size.

And our rekindled relationship has brought about a thawing on our part, with the viability of the Nemo's load area 2.5m3 volume and 610kg payload looking that bit more usable in the real world.

Build quality is commendably tight and helps insulate you from the urban environment, which it's very much at ease with, but we still have mixed feelings regarding the engine, but we'll have to see... •
