A new, dedicated Volvo Selected Used Trucks centre in Coventry is planning to boost sales by 50% for 2004.

The Volvoll-uck and Bus (Southern England) site hopes to shift L500 units throughout Wales and southern England in 2004, under the leadership of general manager Dave Ogden. His competitors believe it's a tall order for a regional sector, but Ogden's confident that the set-up and abilities of his staff are up to the task.

"We have the right products and right support:we have the operator base and we now have the best approach to lining our forecourts with top-quality stock," he proclaims.

Volvo's own Selected Used Trucks scheme started in 1999 and the latest site, a £2m twoacre centre, is annexed to an existing dealer and 24-hour site just off the A45."We could have built it at a junction on the M6, but we would not have had the benefits of a 24-hour workshop," Ogden explains."If a customer buys in the afternoon and some work is required before he collects, we can turn the truck around by the following morning." He is picking up vehicles through buyback, leasing and contract hire deals, as well as scouring the open market. 'Ile customer base will expand with the goodquality used trucks. We have already put vehicles into blue-chip companies such as Dairy Crest and Tarmac," he says. Head office for Volvo Truck and Bus (Southern England) used vehicles has moved from Kettering, Northants, although that site will remain open to handle bodyshop repairs. "Moving has given the team a new lease of life," Ogden reveals. "Sales are already up." Helping to keep things that way are a series of new financial and contract incentives, such as interest-free finance on FL6 17-tonne rigids.

Among the recruits to the Coventry site is used truck sales manager Owen Green, who is keen on the idea of using mobile phone imaging to show customers what vehicles are available. The company has also developed its website, which will showcase 20 vehicles with recommended retail prices.

The new centre caters for 150 vehicles and, along with its sister site in Ely, Cambridgeshire. it will also prepare used stock for the two other branches at Avonmouth and Enfield.

Ogden believes a challenge lies beyond 2004 as customers buying new stretch contacts from three years to five or even seven. If that happens, it will keep potential stock from entering the six-year-old limit set by VolvoTruck and Bus However, the range of products is set to expand:"Following the new FSA rules in 2005, we will have a registered member oi to sell insurance-based products such as rarities, gap insurance and, potentially, coi maintenance," he says.
