Sally Thornley, skills manager for the FTA, says it is up to the industry to invest in its future There are currently grants available from the government, both from the Road Haulage Modernisation Fund (RHMF) via several Skills for Logistics schemes and through the Learning and Skills Council (www.fta,co.ukiinformationi keycarnpaigns/skillsdevelopment/funding/indexhtrn). There are also a number of initiatives such as the FTA 's own driver passport or the Respect for People scheme designed to address retention issues. There is also ongoing discussion in the Road Haulage Forum's training sub-group over extending the RHMF money and to developing industry-wide lock-in clauses to training contracts.
