Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The West Midlands has a flurry of new parking sites. Guy Sheppard reports.

MORE THAN 100 overnight truck-parking spaces are due to open alongside the West Midland motorway network next year, following protests about shortages Nightowl. which took over BP's network of truckstops last year, has submitted plans to expand parking provision at junction 1 of the M54 from 185 spaces to 242. In addition, Roadchef says it is providing 51 dedicated spaces at the only service area on the M6Toll,which is set to open in January.

Parking provision in that region is in short supply.following the loss of several sites to redevelopment. In Walsall. truckers are fighting to prevent the closure of a 30-space park at the junction of Pleck Road and Wolverhampton Road next year (CM 4 September).

However. the Professional Drivers Association, which is petitioning the government for more motorway parking, says the M6 Toll site at Norton Canes near Brownhills will make little difference to the situation.

Founder member Pat Nicholson says trucks will not be using the M6 Toll anyway: "The price of the toll [offers no] reason for lorries to use it. It's more aimed at keeping car drivers happy."

A spokesman for Roadchef says that there will be no separate restaurant facilities for truckers at Norton Canes, but they can expect to find showers and high-speed fuel pumps. The overnight parking fee will be £7. If truckers pay an extra £3, they will receive a £6 voucher to use in the restaurant.

Steve Gutteridge. manager of the Nightowl site on the M54, anticipates the additional parking spaces will be ready by March. He says: "There's a massive need for extra space because there is nowhere out there for these guys to park. We cater for people wanting a more secure environment and are the only police-accredited truck stop in this area.

Moto. which operates the service area between junctions 10A and 11 of the M6. currently provides 64 dedicated spaces.
