Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HIGNER fares—the inevitable result of the recent wage award to provincial company busworkers—will affect most of the country in the near future. During the past week numerous reports of applications to the Traffic Commissioners were received.

An application by the Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd., asks for a 10 per cent. increase from the end of July.

Announcing that the increase would cost the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., between £80,000£90,000 a year, Mr. G. W. Battensby, general Manager, • forecast an early application to the Traffic Commissioners.

Mr. James Amos, chairman, Scottish Bus Group, said that the award would call for a most searching examination of fares throughout Scotland. Announcing that the award would cost the Group £ 11m. a year, Mr. Amos said: "While 1 hope it will be possible to absorb some of this large amount, it will be necessary at some future date to make application for a fares increase." It was unlikely that the increases would be applied before the late summer or early autumn.

Other companies who have stated that fares increases have been or will be applied for are: North Western Road Car Co.. Ltd.; Lancashire United Transport, Ltd.; Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.; Bristol Omnibus Co.. Ltd.; Southern National Omnibus Co., Ltd.; Western National Omnibus Co„ Ltd.; Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co., Ltd.; Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd.; Penmaenmawr Motor Co., Ltd.; Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.; Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd.; Barton Transport, Ltd.; East Midland Motor Services. Ltd., and Hebble Motor Services. Ltd.

As a result of an earlier wage award to municipal busmen the following transport deparments have announced their intention to increase fares: Doncaster, Walsall, Northampton, Warrington, Sunderland and Sheffield.
