TN consequence of the closing of 'Waterloo Bridge, traffic is now being diverted to other of the bridges crossing the Thames, and the use of the following 'routes is indicated as likely to lead to the least inconvenience to road users the shorte,st alternative being sug
gested, in each case .
Traffie from districts east of Blackfriars Bridge could with advantage use Southwark Bridge, whilst vehicles coming from the neighbourhood of King's Cross or St. Pancras would be able to pass along Wing's Cross Road, Farringdon Road, New Bridge Street, Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Road to the " Elephant " or via Stamford Street to Waterloo.
Traffic from the neighbourhood of St. Pancras and Euston, it is suggested, should proceed via Upper Woburn Place, Tavistock Square, Guilford
Street, across Gray's Inn Road, through Calthorpe Street into King's Cross Road,then through Farringdon Road and Farringdon Street as above, whilst Westminster Bridge is available for vehicles passing along Tottenham Court Road, whichcan travel via .Charing Cross Road, Whitehall and over Westminster Bridge.
Traffic from the neighbourhood of Regent Street and the -.`Marble Arch can pass over Vauxhall Bridge after travelling by way of Hyde Park Corner, Grosvenor Place and Vauxhall Bridge Road.
Vehicles from the South-East of London can approach the river either via the " Elephant" and Blackfriars Bridge for places due north or via Camberwell Green, Camberwell New Road, Kennington Oval, Vauxhall Bridge and thence either along the Embankment towards Westminster or Vauxhall Bridge Road ' to Victoria.
In the case of traffic to and from Caent Garden Market use can be made of the Aldwych, Fleet Street, Blackfriars Bridge route' but it is not desirable that heavily laden vehicles should attempt to go down the somewhat steep gradients in order to get on to the Embankment in the neighbourhood of the Temple.
As the necessity for these diversions 'will involve extra traffic on Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges, it is desirable to avoid congestion in the immediate approaches. Traffic proceeding along Holborn for Blackfriars may find it desirable to turn through Charterhouse Street to Ferringdon Street, as St. Andrew's Street, leading to Shoe Lane and St. Bride Street, is obstructed by road repairs.
