• From the end of September trucks will have to pass tougher emission tests as part of a series of measures designed to try to cut airborne pollution.
The change to the annual test will apply to all diesel LGVs, light commercials and PSVs first used on or after 1 August 1979. Assuming it gets Parliamentary approval, the change will come into effect on 25 September 1995.
Transport Minister Steven Norris says: "Effective control of vehicle emissions is a key element in the Government's strategy for improving air quality."
The emission limit will fall from 3.2 to 2.5/m-1 for non-turbocharged engines, and from 3.7 to 3.0/m-1 for turbocharged engines.
Hauliers are not being singled out: the emission limit for petrol-engined cars will fall by 25%, with catalytic converters facing a special test.
