Cookson & Son, of Welshpool, were granted a new national licence for four vehicles and four trailers after Mr Cookson surrendered a similar licence in his own name at a Cardiff public inquiry.

However, South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh only granted the licence until the end of November.

Consideration of disciplinary action against Mr Cookson had earlier been adjourned to enable him to supply the LA with further financial information.

Cooksons accountant, Hugh Tombs, said he had draft accounts up to 31 March. He confirmed that Mr and Mrs Cookson owned a farm at Duffryn Berriew and said he would be able to supply Cull audited accounts by the end of November.

Directing that the renewal of the licence be considered at a Further public inquiry, Mervyn Pugh said this had been a complicated case. Mr Cookson's reputation had been on the line and he owed his professional advisors a great deal. It would be a good idea if the accounts could be sent in before the next public inquiry so that any queries could be raised beforehand, with a DOT financial adviser if necessary.
