Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONE OR MORE new bus garages will be built in Glasgow by 1984. Greater Glasgow PTE is negotiating for three possible sites in the city, one in part of a housing estate which may be demolished.

It wants to build one new garage within the next five years, and will close some older premises which are either uneconomic or in areas where it is difficult to recruit staff — as recommended by its own study.

The study, which followed the arbitrary closure of two garages in 1976 and 1977, looked at the sizes, productivity, and locations of existing garages and found marginal advantages in some relocation.

Generally, 70-100 vehicle garages are most economical and manageable, found the report.

There is also a yearly saving of up to £30,000 if garages are close to routes, but the PTE finds that services are better il routes are not shared by garages, so it is trying to avoid splitting them.

Already, two city garages have been modernised and open-air premises at Ibrox will be rebuilt as a covered site. The new garage will cost about £300,000 more than refurbished premises.
