"SLEEPING POLICEMEN" may soon be permitted on the public highway at the discretion of local authorities.
The so-called sleeping policemen — officially termed speed control humps — are the subject of a recently published report by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The report gives a favourable verdict on the five TRRL "hump" experiments.
Said Minister of Transport Norman Fowler "The conclusion is that suitably located humps can substantially reduce vehicle speeds, traffic flows and road accidents."
Under the Road Traffic Act 1974 the experimental humps could be in place for a maximum of one year on public roads. MP for Harrow Central Anthony Grant has introduced a Bill which would give local authorities the right to construct speed control humps where they considered necessary for indefinite periods.
