Last week a public auction of the cabs and effects of the Express Motor Cab Co., Ltd., took place at the garage in Camden Town. The Ballot cabs fetched from £70 to LAO and the Belsize from £120 to 2150. There were several country buyers, and a few were bought for India. A few were purchased with the idea of straightaway getting them relicensed for London, and the buyer appeared to be Unaware that these cabs would require some alteration beforehand. "W. and G." He commenced business in March, 1907. with cabs procured on the hire-purchase system. In September last he transferred the 'business to the Brighton Automobile Co. He stated that his original capital had gone in losses on the business, owing to the rent of premises being too heavy. He attributed his insolvency "to going ahead without any money."

The case was heard at Bow Street, and for the defence the (Myer contended that he was not in Whitehall at all on the day in ques

tion. The magistrate adjourned the case sine die, to see if a Colonel Lloyd, who witnessed the occurrence, which was merely the disregard of the police officer's signal, could give evidence. He had gone away to the country but was able to attend on Saturday last, when the magistrate imposed a fine of 210 and 23s. costs.

Cent. per Cent. in U.S.A.

The British Consul at St. Louis, U.S.A., reports that there are 125 taxicabs in that city and no motorbuses. He is of opinion that the local taxicab services do not pay. The fare schedule is : for two passengers, first mile 2s. hi. and 5d.

for each succeeding mile ; for three or four passengers, 4s. Id. for the first two-thirds of a mile. Each package costs 10d. as an extra. The wages of the drivers are 8s. 4d. per day with the expectation of a like amount in tips, and we presume they collar the extras.

Medical Certificate Regulations.

The deputation of the Cabdrivers and Bus and Tramdrivers Unions to Mr. Masterman, at the Home Office on Tuesday of last week, has resulted in the modification of the recent order as to a compulsory medical certificate. No driver at present holding a mechanical licence is to be examined if he be under 50 years of age, but a driver who is 50 or over may be called upon to be examined every five years. Any applicant for a new licence is to be subjected to a severe medical examination. As the majority of those at present holding mechanical licences have already been examined by the cab companies for insurance purposes, the risk of any accident owing to unfitness is a remote one. It is. however, curious to note that a driver of one of the Brixton cabs was taken suddenly ill on Wednesday morning of last week, while at the wheel, and died without recovering consciousness. Such a case is happily very rare.
