PPIE trade returns recently published should be an encouragement to hauliers. A point of interest arises from the recent disclosure of the contract for Russian timber. It becomes evident that there will be less timber imported from that quarter of the globe and more from Canada, so that the distribution will be spread over a wider area.

Yorkshire.

An appreciable improvement in the iron and steel industry is reported from Middlesbrough. Manufacturers of steel strip in Sheffield and district are busy and this product is being used by makers of razor blades, as well as for box strapping. A new use for it has been found by Samuel Fox and Co., Stockbridge, which is making shoe-lace tags and similar products.

Hull Town Council housing and town planning committee has approved a proposal to build 60 cottage flats and 142 houses. Sheffield Town Council is to borrow £57,974 to erect 184 houses on the Shiregreen Estate. Messrs. Stuarts, of Brighton, are to erect 80 houses on the Darnley Estate, Wakefield. Harrogate is to have a greyhound racing track.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

The cotton trade is now definitely on the up grade. Manchester is in receipt of orders from the Dominions and the Continent, as well as from home counties, so that there is an increasing demand for haulage between mills and from factory to customer. According to reports from Liverpool, Warrington and Runcorn, the demand for leather is steady.

The prospects in the ship-repairing industry on the Mersey appear to be good. Harland and Wolff, Ltd., is busy, also Cammell Laird and Co., Birkenhead.

Liverpool Town Council is considering a recommendation to build a new junior school at Dovecot and a senior school on the Einehims Farm site. Ashton-under-Lyne Town Council housing committee has approved the proposed erection of 132 houses and 16 flats at Ladbrook Road, Smallshaw. A school is to be constructed at Nelsen. Cheshire.

E. Taylor and Co., Ltd., Ebor Street, Littleborough,near Manchester, is to build a school at Birkdale, whilst Mark Lane and Co., Ltd., Heaton Lane, Stockport, is to erect a school for Stocks port Council.

Midlands.

Business in the hosiery and .lace trade of Nottingham, Leicester and district is temporarily quiet pending the outcome of the January sales. Makers of light castings in the Birmingham area are busy.

Brownhills Urban District Council is to build 50 more houses, Rushdon Urban District Council is to erect 56 houses near Tennyson Place, Messrs.. A. J. Fieldhonse are to erect 218 houses on the Elston Hall Estate, Bushbury, near Can whilst Nottingham Town Council has agreed to the erection of 98 houses and flats in Red Lion Street.

Mansfield Town Council has received sanction to borrow £17,340 for the erection of a school, £12,432 for building 37 additional houses, and 14,800 for the erection of small houses on the Ravensdale site.

Mr. Cyril Chown, of Chowns, Ltd., is interested in a scheme to develop the Richfield Estate, Northampton. The plan provides for the construction of 290 houses.

Wales.

The Welsh ,coal trade is maintaining the high level recently attained. This good news applies to inland as well as export trade. The demand for tin-plate shows signs of a steady increase. Messrs. W, Arthur, of Abersychan, are to erect a school at Istradgynlais for B reconshi re Education Committee.

East Anglia.

Messrs. C. Corby and Sons, of Hingham, Norfolk, are to erect 26 cottages for Freebridge Lynn Rural District Council.

Scotland.

The quantity of shipping repair work on the Clyde was sufficient to keep the yards busy over the holidays. Harland and Wolff, Ltd., has plenty of work on hand, as also has the D. and W. Henderson concern, and the latter is installing new Diesel engines in the "Flying Cloud" and has dry-docked the steamer Considerable developments are expected in the electrical industry in Scotland.

Aberdeen Town Council education committee has approved proposed improvements to Kittybrewster and Mile End Schools, and it is proposed to proceed with extensions at the M'Lean Museum and Lecture Hall, Greenock. Kincardine Education Committee has under consideration alterations in the plans for a new school for Laurencekirk, whilst 19 bungalows are to be built at Rankine Driveand Brisbane Glen Road, Large.

The Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, is to be extended. The Glasgow Estates Development Co. and the Western Heritable Investment Co. are to erect some of the 2,512 houses to be built at Carndonald.

London and Home Counties.

Bermondsey Borough Coancil is to erect 36 flats in Crosby Row and another 36 in Silver Street, as well as 49 flats in Fort Road. Thargood and Sons, Ltd., Much Hadhara, is to build eight houses for Buntingford Rural District Council. The Building Public Works and Construction Co., Swindon, is to build 36 houses for Evesham Rural District Council. Messrs. W. E. Waltham, of Grays, are about to commence work on the Bata boot factory at East Tilbury.

It is proposed to erect a new hotel on the site of the old Willowbayne Hotel, at Angniering-on-Sea. Epsom Urban District Council is to apply for sanction to borrow £60,930 for the erection of 168 houses and 8 bungalows. Priem Barnet Urban DisSriet Council is applying for clearance orders in respect of certain property in the south ward and for sanction to borrow 118,400 for erection of 56 flats
