TIATEINTT No. 339,684, by C. ;E.

Rackham and the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd.. relates to a device which forms a free wheel or positive drive at the will of the operator.

A represents the shaft leading from the gearbox, whilst B is the shaft leading to the final drive. B carries a member (D) attached to a ring (E), which is provided with internal ratchet teeth. Ordinary dogs are formed at F to enable 1) to make a positive engagement with C, which carries a set of . pawls and is slidably mounted on splines on the shaft (A).

When a' free wheel is' required, the member C is moved to the right, so that the dogs disengage,' the pawls then being the only means by which C can drive E in only one direction. To produce a hi-directional drive, the dogs are engaged, as shown in the longitudinal section, The ratchet teeth in E are wider than the pawls. so that the latter may slide sideways and still retain their lull engagment with the ratchet teeth of E.

So far there seems to be but little of novelty in the arrangement. The special points of the invention appear to us to lie in the following details :—

To prevent the noise which would, in ordinary circumstances, occur when a ratchet is used as a free wheel. passages are provided at G to allow oil to flow, -under the effect of centrifugal force, to the U-sectioned annulus in which the pawls work.

To prevent the shock which would, ordinarily, occur when dogs of the kind used are engaged, while the two shafts are not rotating at the same speed, they are made a close fit and without any relief to lead them into engagement.

A SOMEWEIAT novel form of free

wheel clutch is described in the specification, No. 339,692, of E. H. J. Gillett, 51, Priory Road, West Hampstead.

The specification points out that with free wheels in which rollers jam on inclined surfaces, and where the whole of the. torque is transmitted through such rollers, there is an inclination for the rollers to form indentations in the surfaces of the slopes, as contact always occurs in the same place, and the pressure is very great.

The object of the present invention is to provide a unidirectional-drive clutch in which jamming rollers are employed merely to induce the gripping of a self-energizing wind-on coil.

The engine shaft is represented by 1, whilst 12 is the driven shaft. Carried with 1 is the inner cylinder (2), at the left hand of which are the slopes on which the rollers (6) impinge, and on

the drum of which the coil bears when contracted.

The outer member of the jamming clutch is indicated by 5, and to this, at 5s, one end of the coil is attached, the other end being attached, at 8x. to the outer cylinder (9) rotating with 12.

It will be seen from this that the jamming clutch when it operates causes the coil to contract and grip the inner cylinder with a self-energizing effect.

Reclaiming Used Oil.

A COMPACT apparatus for reclaiming

used lubricating oil is described in the specification, No. 318,626, of Aktiebolaget separator, of Fleminggatan 8, Stockholm, Sweden.

The apparatus consists of a tank in which the oil is heated by an electric element, governed by a thermostat, to the desired temperature, from which it is pumped to the centrifugal separator.

Water and other unwanted substances are discharged by the lower pipe, whilst the remaining oil: is returned to the tank, the oil passing through the separator again and again until the required viscosity and flash point have been attained.

Certain arrangements made in the separator ensure that the oil will be thrown out from the bowl in the form of very fine spray. A current of air passes through the spray, thus evaporating the lighter fractions.

Cocks are so arranged that when the. oil has been :through the separator a sufficient number 'of ttiniess it Can be finally driven through the filter press.
