The Successful Application of a New Brown-Lipe Transmission System to Chassis Built by the Standard Co.

AFTER a severe series of tests on good and bad roads and in deep, muddy excavations, the Standard Motor Truck Co., of Detroit, recently decided that all of its 31-1) and 5-K models were to be fitted with the new BrownLine "maximum speed transmission," which is a development of the supplementary gear and permits the normal number of speeds to be doubled.

The tests demonstrated clearly that the new transmission enables lorries to travel at a higher speed without undue strain, not only on good roads, but through soft ground. It also enables vehicles to climb gradients of varying steepness without increasing the engine speed, for often a vehicle is speeded up on a low gear because the next higher is just a fraction too Much for the engine.

For hauling loads on good roads between cities, the new transmission, with a rear axle reduction of 81 to 1, ensures a speedy, powerful, dependable and economical 31-5-ton lorry.

The overdrive of 0.78 to 1 in high range permits an increase in speed without racing the engine, whilst the third gear in the high range enables the lorry to climb gradients at a greater speed than is the case when the vehicle is running in the high gear with the ordinary type of transmission.

The unusually low reductions that are possible allow of greater tractive effort when this is necessary. In addition, the great range of power and speeds makes lorries fitted with the new transmission well adapted to cope with the varying road conditions encountered. It is also claimed that the sating in petrol consumption and the wear of tyres is considerable on lorries fitted with the Brown-Lipe device, and that the normal engine speed guarantees longer life to the engine and other working parts.

Lorries adapted for tipping work and extra heavy haulage benefit by being fitted with the new transmission, for with a rear-axle reduction of 84 to 1. such a vehicle becomes adapted to handle any kind of haulage work both with economy and ease.

B34 Whilst the 0.78 to 1 high gear in the high range permits an increase in road speed without racing the engine, the low gear in low range is powerful enough to pull lorries out of excavations, etc., without the aid of other mechanical means provided the lorry can get such a grip of the road that it does not sink faster than it moves ahead.

For pulling out of excavations, Kuh as building foundations in the busy parts of cities, it is -claimed that this special transmission is ideal. There is practically no chance of stalling the engine owing to the various ratios and speeds possible, whilst on long return trips thc higher speed tilde possible by Almover

drive enables lorries to mate more trips in the sable time.

Satisfactory results have also been obtained by lorries fitted with the BrownLipe transmission and used for the haul ing of trailers. One standard model 5-K lorry loaded with 286 cement blocks, each weighing 75 lb., also drew a duller loaded with 240 similar blocks with ease over a snowbound road in Michigan. This load represented a total weight of 191 tons.

As a matter of fact, the new trans. mission device actually does more than double the speeds, for it provides seven distinct ratios for forward running and two for reverse.
