• Jobs are set to go in the Tesco own-account distribution operation as productivity gains are demanded from the supermarket giant's eight distribution centres.

Distribution staff are to be asked to take early retirement and voluntary redundancy to achieve greater productivity: "We cannot say how many staff will be involved at this stage," says a Tesco spokesman. "Our aim is to to keep a balanced workforce. These measures are prudent and sensible, particularly at this current time of recession."

Although the supermarkets are notoriously hard on their suppliers, the spokesman says he is "not aware of any change in regard to outside operators". Distribution companies, including NFC and Hays Distribution Services, run Tesco's distribution centres.

The supermarket chain carries out about 45% of its distribution. It has centres at Harlow, Hinckley, Crick, Welham Green, Westbury, Weybridge, Winsford and Milton Keynes. Tesco employs around 3,000 staff and runs 300 tractive units.

Next year Tesco's Winsford centre will close and be replaced by a site at Middlewich, Cheshire, which will serve the North, North-West and the Midlands.

Tesco's composite distribution system came on stream in 1989. It claims that the system allows a high level of product availability.
