and for its status as a tax haven, is just nine miles by five, but it has 450 miles of roads. For such a small place, the countryside is surprisingly diverse: there are lush valleys as well as flat land. The coastline has tall cliffs, sandy beaches and rocky coves. Officially Jersey is known as a Crown Peculiar: it makes its own laws, which explains the unconventional transport legislation—no road tax, no 0-licences and, for vehicles less than 2.3m wide, no MoT tests. Jersey residents pay an annual income tax to the States of Jersey, the island's government, but at a lower rate than mainland residents do. No VAT is levied, and Jersey is not a member of the European Union.
The island is 14 miles from France, and the Gallic influence is strong. The chief language is English, although some older residents still speak the native Jersey French, otherwise known as Jerriais, which is a blend of Norse and Norman French. French was the official language until the 1960s, and most of the street names—and many of the surnames— are French.
