Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A N exhaust silencer which is claimed —1 to bring about a considerable reducion in the black smoke emitted is being aarketed by a Mr. Samuel Titterton, of ykcs Street. Stockport. No exact details re available, but it is understood that he basic idea behind the silencer which /as first designed (and patented by 4r. Titterton) some 15 years ago, is to ,btain hot water. To do this, coils of opper tube are believed to be located aside the silencer and water passed arough them is heated up.

The reduction in black smoke is said a be because of the deflection of hot exhaust gases on to the relatively cool tubes and it is claimed that this has the effect of depositing the carbon contained in the exhaust.

After trials with one set, S. C. Cummings, bodybuilders of Crewe, have ordered 30 silencers. These are for fitting to mobile shops and other food-carrying vehicles, and it is understood that the main reason for using these particular units is the provision of an easy way Of getting hot water.. It is reported, however, that the trial unit did appear to effect a reduction in black smoke emitted by the vehicle.
