rOR some time considerable attention

has been given by members of Associated Road Operators in the Faversham (Kent) district to establishing a road-transport Pool to provide facilities for sending locally grown fruit to northern and western markets. A further step forward was taken recently when a number of interested operators, led by Mr. F. Elvy and Mr. F. Cretner, met the Regional Transport Commissioner, Lieut.-Col. F. Gordon Tucker, and his chief assistant, Capt. E. W. Phillips, at Faversham, to discuss the outline of a scheme and more particularly the possibility of making promptly available additional supplementary fuel coupons for those participating.

Briefly, the scheme envisages the pooling of traffic by those fruit carriers who give it their support, no obstacles being placed in the way of any such carrier in the district joining the Pool. Unless absolutely unavoidable, vehicles of a carrying capacity of only 8 tons or more would be used for the longdistance hauls, and one important part of the scheme is that return loads will, it is expected, always be available. Lieut.-Col. Gordon Tucker gave the scheme his blessing and has made arrangements through the Sub-District Manager, ,Mr. F. Cremer, that additional supplementary fuel coupons shall be available at a moment's notice as and when required, Mr. F. Elvy as originator and leader of the Pool being made responsible for the issue of such extra coupons and for accounting for them to Mr. Cremer.

The scheme has the support of the most prominent members of the fruitgrowing industry in Kent, several of whom were present at the meeting at Faversham.

Mr. Elvy, whose address is The Square, Doddington, Rent, is particularly anxious to make contact with operators or concerns in Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow who want road-transport facilities for goods for London and th( south-east.

Final details of the internal organization of the Pool are now being worked out and interested fruit carriers in the Sittingbourne and Faversham district should contact Mr. Elvy for further details. EMERGENCY GOODS-TRANSPORT COMMITTEE FOR NORTH•EAST

FOR the purpose of dealing with goods-transport emergencies a special committee has been set up by the North-eastern Transport Commissioner. This committee, which meets daily, includes representatives of the L.M.S. and L.N.E. railway companies, the North-eastern Division of the C.M.U.A. and the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O. In cases of traffic which would, normally, be rail-borne hut cannot go by rail because of circumstances due to the war, it is handed over to the road representatives, who in turn contact road operators, with the object of obtaining the vehicles necessary to handle it.
