The Road Haulage Association (RNA) has said that, on some A-roads, the speed limit should be raised from 40mph to 50mph in a bid to improve road safety.

Burke agrees, saying modern trucks are much better equipped to cope with the twists

and turns of Britain's smaller roads.

"The brakes on trucks these days have improved dramatically from what they used to

be,' he explains. "A 50mph limit would also probably discourage cars from trying to overtake. You do get some hare-brained drivers attempting to pass lorries en A-roads.

He adds: "Travelling at 40mph is less safe than travelling at 50mph."

But a much more pressing problem, Burke believes, is cyclists' behaviour.

A recent incident in the London rush hour brought it home to him.

"I was in a taxi at a junction and the driver was indicating to turn left. A cyclist came up on the inside. But when the lights changed, the cyclist went straight on. As he did so, he clipped the taxi. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It should be illegal for a cyclist to pass on the inside of any vehicle at a junction."
