Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane.

If you have any off-beat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a soft-heart ed old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works—and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Drop the Hawk a line at

Commercial Motor, Bird's Eye View, Rm 11203, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS, or fax him on 0181 652 8969.

Men in blue

hese overall-clad lads are proudly clutch ing certificates which have just been awarded to them by Peter Cartwright (fifth from right), group managing director of Cartwright Training, for successfully completing NVQ Level 2 as engineering apprentices. Also present is training officer John Keogh (third from left). The boys were among the first group of 25 to take part in Cartwright's apprentice training scheme. The good news

for them is they now all get rewarded with a weekly bonus. The Cartwright group has trained apprentices via day-release schemes since 1960, but in 1996 it opened its own training school premises on-site in Altrincham. Investing in the future makes sound sense. It's about time they had an apprentice training scheme for the Hawk, so he can hand down his legacy to the generations to come.
