Mobile Dual purpose Shovel with Road Speed of 26 m.p.h. Purchasers Given Choice of Petrol or Oil Engine

rrHE Allen Super Duty Shovel is a 1 dual-purpose mobile appliance being capable of doing duty on excavation work with a grab or as a crane. A point of interest is that it operates through a complete circle, there being no dead angle. This means that, however restricted the manoeuvring space for the chassis, the functioning of the shovel is not hampered.

Its mobility may be gauged by the fact that in top gear the speed is 26 m.p.h.

The choice of two power units is given in a six-cylindered petrol engine developing 62 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m., or a Waukesha-Hes,selman oil engine of similar power output. A gearbox of the heavy-duty type providt.s five forward speeds and a reverse, the road speeds in the respective gears being 3.5, 6.05, 11.05, 17.9 and 26.5 m.p.h., with 4.35 m.p.h. in reverse. A substantial rear axle being a vital necess'ty on a vehicle of this type, this component is reinforced to withstand loads up to 11 tons.

Hydraulic and Mechanical Braking.

Lockhe43 hydraulic braking is adopted on the wheels, with an emergency brake of the mechanical type operating on the drive shaft. Power for the turntable mechanism is, of course, obtained from the engine, the drive being through a 13-in, doubledisc clutch and the gearbox to a transfer case located to the rear of the main gearcase.

A quick-action positive lock is provided for the table, the means for operating it being accessible from the driver's seat. In order to relieve the centre post of the main stresses, the turntable is equipped with rollers both

on the top and bottom of the circular gear track. There are four of these rollers, their dimensions being 6 ins. in diameter with a 24-in, face. Adequate protection from the ingress of foreign matter to the ball bearings on which the rollers are mounted is provided. The drive for the turntable is

by bevel reduction gear, through a vertical swing shaft to a spur wheel and internally toothed .gear ring.

A feature of the Allen shovel is the finger-tip air-controlled clutches which, whilst providing a fine degree of control, go a long way to eliminate fatigue of the operator.

It will be noted from the accompanying illustration of the Allen mobile shovel at work that the operator is fully protected, which, incidentally, means that the turntable and driving mechanism are also well protected.

Dimensions and Weights.

The shovel capacity is j cubic yd. and that of the dragline and grab is 1 cubic yd: Other leading dimensions and weights are as follow :—Overall width, 7 ft. 11 ins.; overall length, 17 ft. 1 in.; height to top of mast, 8 ft. 9 ins.; height to top of cab, 9 ft.

2 ins.; wheelbase, 12 ft. 4 ins.; tail swing, 5 ft. 6 ins.;, weight as a shovel, 8 tons 12 cwt.; weight as a 25-ft. crane, -8 tons 2 cwt.; weight as a 30-ft. crane with extra balance weight, 8 tons 12 cwt.

The maker is John Allen and Sons (Oxford), Ltd„ Cowley, Oxford.
