Leicester-based Widdowson Group has had Roadrunner Professional for many years and uses the current version to help manage a 145-strong fleet of rig ids and etas across three different sites.

IT systems manager Richard Baxter says the flexibility of the software and the supplier both stand out. He particularly praises the software's auto-legging, manifesting and unallocated vehicle functions, as well as driver/vehicleftrailer off-road utility, which he says is "very beneficial". Having started with the old text-based version, Baxter says Wddowson Group also finds the Windows graphical user interface a plus, not least as it allows for multiple diaries and other windows to be opened at once.

The only thing that lets the software dawn slightly, in Baxter's view, is the rate card system, which isn't quite flexible enough to cater for the firms many different rates and bonus schemes.

Despite this minor niggle, Baxter rates the software as "tremendous" value for money and gives it an overall mark of eight out of 10.

Specialist bulk powder operator CRW in Bath runs more than 180 vehicles across nine depots and has used Roadrunner Professional for the past couple of years. Paul Withers in CRW's IT department, who was responsible for implementing the system, says the main benefit is that all users at all depots can immediately see new jobs as soon as they are entered on the system.

The software's ability to transmit new jobs to drivers' PDAs is also useful, Baxter points outCRW is just rolling out PDAs into all its vehicles for signature-capture purposes.

Withers says it would be nice I the software let CRW permanently allocate certain trailers to certain tractor units rather than forcing the same trailer to be allocated to the same tractor every time a job is entered as a bulk powder operator, the firm doesnl tend to swap trailers around much but this small gripe aside he's very happy with it and, like Baxter, awards the software an overall score of eight out of 10,
