• Ford has introduced a direct-injection turbo-diesel unit for the Courier and Fiesta vans. The 1.8TDdi engine adds £130 to the cost of the vans but is said to offer a 15% improvement in fuel economy. It develops 74hp at 4,000rpm, with peak torque up 35Nm to 140Nm at 2,500rpm. Ford says the new engine is quieter too, with a smoother throttle control. The TDdi Courier costs 28,390; the Fiesta is 17,990.
