TUNNELLING TO PROF11 • The Viking Hotel in York will host a conference on 9 September, on the business opportunities which will be created by the Channel Tunnel.

This will be the first chance to discuss the issues raised by British Rail's tunnel train report. The BR study stated that the North would not be fully incorporated into the Chunriel system until the late 1990s, thus excluding northern businessmen from the European bonanza.

Speakers will include the Minister of State for Transport, Michael Portillo, as well as experts involved in the tunnel project.

For further information, telephone John Clark on (0904) 430230.

TRAINING FOR SUCCESS III The Institute of Road Transport Engineers is to hold its fourth conference aimed at emphasising the importance and cost-effectiveness of education and training in the motor vehicle engineering industry.

Attendees have the chance to update themselves on recent education and training initiatives and to question those involved in these matters.

The conference will be held in the RTITB's MOTEC centre at High Ercall, Shropshire on 25-26 October.

Contact Mr Birch on 01-589 3744.

GET READY FOR EUROPI • A one-day course, The Development of European Marketing Strategy for Transport and Distribution Companies, will be held at Huddersfield Polytechnic on 30 November.

The organisers say it is a "strategic planning course and not intended to give a comprehensive review of the legal, technical or financial changes that will occur in and prior to 1992." It is, however, aimed at senior managers who have responsibility for, or input into, strategic planning.

For details contact: The Centre for Transport and Distribution, Huddersfield Poly, Huddersfield, or telephone (0484) 22288, Ext 2348/2200.

NEW SPOTS?

• The Chartered Institute of Transport is to hold a conference dealing with the need for change in a rapidly-changing industry. Lord Brabazon of Tara, Minister for aviation and shipping, will give the keynote address entitled: Can The Leopard Change Its Spots?

An impressive array of speakers will consider market services, financial control, training policies and management restructuring.
