ADAIMLER bus, which first went into service in January, 1944, and was scheduled for disposal, has been modified by Burnley transport department for use in connection with the town's centenary year celebrations. All seating has been removed from the vehicle to accommodate 62 six-volt Lucas and Oldham batteries, which supply the power intended for the displays mounted on a framework built round the vehicle.
The Burnley coat of arms is mounted on the front upper panel, surrounded by an illuminated inscription, a portion of which is intermittent. One side of the front lower panel bears a plaque of an electric tram and on the other side there is a plaque of a steam tram. The nearside panelling is designed to encourage the public to use the Corporation's buses and the off-side panelling shows changes and expansion in industrial and social services in the town.
The rear panel is used to advertise events in connection with the celebrations. Military music is played from a tape-recorder and amplified.
£57m. Allocated to Major Road Schemes
NEARLY £57m. has been allocated to 27 major road construction schemes which were started in the past six months. Roughly £40m. of this will be spent on three motorway projects.
These three are the Lancashire section of the Birmingham-Preston motonva) (due to be opened in June, 1963), the Medway Motorway (due to be finished in April, 1963) and the North Cheshire section of the Birmingham-Preston motorway (expected to be finished in August, 1963).
