THE MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER is a common sight on UK roads, and it is a popular choice on the second-hand market.

The Sprinter is strong, easy to drive, reliable and versatile. Here's a rundown of what to look out for if you are planning to purchase one. [Additional information supplied by www.usedvanexpert.co.uki

Vehicle

This week's focus is on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, launched in 1999, through to 2006.

The van range included new common-rail engines, which were launched in 2000 12.2-litre and 2.7-litre diesel and 2.3-litre petrol]. Its payload ranged from 200kg to 2,800kg. Bodywork: check the sliding door slides easily and locks If it sticks, drops down or doesn't slide easily, the runners and rollers will need replacing. Seek a £70 discount or get it fixed. Rear doors: check they operate easily and make sure the straps are intact. If the straps are broken, the door can swing and could result in damage to the door and/or bodywork. Hold out for a £50 discount or have it repaired.

Engine

Injectors: run the engine for several minutes, then check for diesel or oil smells in the cab. Use the cab fan to test. Fumes suggests injector seals have failed. This can result in a build-up of carbon. Expect a £500-plus concession.

Prop shaft listen for a loud clonk as you pull away and ascertain if there are any vibrations when the van is moving. Symptoms indicate that the universal joints are on the way out. Have it repaired or budget £160.

Air filter: check its gauge. If it's red, have it replaced — £50.

Power: if the van struggles to accelerate, it could be a sensor or the brake lamp switch, which reduces the power allowed from the engine management system. Get it checked.

Injectors/fuel pump: start the vehicle from cold and warm, and then accelerate past 3,000rpm to check the power.

If the vehicle struggles to start or will not accelerate above 3,000rpm, it is normally the injectors and/or fuel pump. Get them checked out before you buy.

Fuel leaks: check for condensation and/or fuel leaks around a triangular-shaped box at the front of the engine. If it is the fuel pump, it needs replacing. Budget 1300.

Chassis

Ball joints: move the steering wheel from side to side while driving on the flat and cheek for any play. When going over speed bumps, listen for a knocking sound. Either suggests the ball joints need replacing. Negotiate a £50 discount for bushes, and £600 for the ball joints.
