• Salford Magistrates have again adjourned a case arising from alleged falsification of tachograph records by Student Products' drivers (CM 28 August-2 September).
The Salford-based company is accused of 15 offences of causing the drivers to make false entries on tachograph charts. Driver John Davies of Salford faces four charges of making false entries. Anthony Orange of Altrincham is accused of eight offences and Stephen Flower of Timperley is accused of three. Managing director Stewart Miller is accused of aiding and abetting the drivers.
The court was told that Flower and Orange initially consented to summary trial. They had admitted the offences and sentence had been deferred. The other defendants had written to say they would also consent to summary trial. Now, however, they wished to elect for trial at the Crown Court where Flowers and Orange would be called to give evidence.
The Magistrates adjourned the case until 13 October after the Clerk to the Court pointed out this put both the prosecution and the court in some difficulty. There were a number of points that required clarification, he said.
