• A claim by the Transport & General Workers' Union that the pay dispute between 90 drivers and P&O Trans European is set to be resolved by the end of this week has been angrily refuted by P&O bosses.

Ron Webb, T&G national secretary for road transport, says the one outstanding issue to be resolved in the row, which has already led to two one-day strikes, concerns the wording of a new agreement.

But David Immison, director of communications at P&O Trans European, says that it is "impossible to say" when the row will be resolved.

A P&O spokesman describes the situation as "very sensitive" and reports that the T&G and P&O have agreed there would be no communication with outside parties over the dispute.

The row erupted when P&G Trans European decided to harmonise pay and conditions across eight sites in its spot and affreightment division.

• CM'S sister monthly magazine, Truck it Driver has recently been contacted by a number of P&O Trans European drivers complaining about less-than-complimentary remarks allegedly made by a former manager at the NTO fleet.

PAD has so far declined to respond directly to the drivers' complaints.
