DROP-STAMP FORGING OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS

ARECENT publication of the Aluminium Development Association, 67, Brook Street, London, W.I, deals with drop-stamp forging of aluminium alloys. As a result of improvement in drop-stamp equipment and technique, it is now possible to produce small quantities of deepdrawn shapes in aluminium and alloy sheet, which formerly could be produced only by hand methods. The booklet, "Forming of Aluminium Alloys by the Drop Stamp," deals comprehensively with the subject, and is profusely illustrated. It is priced at Is. and can be obtained from the address given.

IMPROVEMENTS IN COMMUNICATIONS

REGISTERED and unregistered letters, printed and commercial papers may now be sent by surface route to countries in Europe, except Germany.

A telephone service with Bolivia was opened on October 28, and is available between 1 and 7 p.m. daily.

On and after to-day, the surcharge of 2s. 6d. on three-minute calls from Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man to the Continent is abolished.

OBITUARY

ONLY recently did we learn of the death, on October 6, at the age of 72, of an old friend, Mr. Alan E. L. Chorlton, C.B.E., F.R.S.A., M.I.C.E. He was a keen enthusiast on oil engines, and delivered before the Royal Society of Arts, in 1932, the Howard Lectures on the subject of "Oil Engine Traction." He gained much experience in engineering in Russia, Germany and other countries. He also took ,a keen interest in politics.
