Some Details of Saurer Products Which Will Be Seen at Olympia.

ONE of the best known of the Continental makes of commercial vehicle on the British market is the Saurer. It is one which has achieved a very satisfactory place in transport work both for passengers and goods, and it embodies certain features which have lifted it far out of the ordinary rut, the chief of these being the Sauter patent engine brake, which operates by turning the engine cylinders into air compressors, the air being released at the top of each piston stroke, and the difference in timing effected by sliding the camshaft bodily until fresh cam profiles are brought into

The other distinguishing feature is the single reduction final drive by bevel pinion and crown wheel.

Until Saurer perfected this drive it was thought impossible to obtain the efficiency and strength in a drive of this type giving a:large reduction. The secret is to allow thA' teeth of the bevel pinion to touch only at their extreme ends with the gear running light, and as the load increases so does the area of tooth contact; owing to the extremely slight but appreciable .spring of the pinion and its teeth,

Minor points in the design are themechanism for automatically retarding the ignition when starting, and the patent system of two-pump circulation for the engine lubrication. Now we learn that a very special new chassis with a six-cylindered power unit, and known as the 4B.L. model, is about to be placed on the British market. This chassis has an exceptionally low frame height and is intended for passenger work only. Without being in any way freakish, the design embodies certain outstanding characteristics which are in several respects unique, whilst the standard and quality of workmanship are of the usual high order associated with Saurer products. • We shall give further details of this new chassis so soon as they are available.

To those who are interested in .detail design, one of the exhibits Oil the Stand of the Saurer Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd., 21., Augustus 'Street, London, NM., will make a special appeal, as it will be a chassis partially dismantled to show the construction and parts of certain of the units.
